What to do with that Poinsettia It will require patience, but where there’s a will, your own green thumb will have a way. POST-HOLIDAY POINSETTIA CARE That poinsettia plant is just not looking as lush and vibrant as it did a month ago. In fact, it’s shedding leaves and looking a bit tired a wilted. But fret not poinsettia caretaker with ambition, before you give that Christmas plant a toss, read on to see how your own green thumb can provide an enriched and long post-holiday life to that fickle poinsettia. Regular Maintenance to your plant should include: keeping it away from drafts or high heat areas, fertilizing once per month and watering when the soil is dry. The plant should be exposed to at least five hours of sunlight each day. Depending on the time of year, exposure to sun requirements will vary. February or March GIVE IT A TRIM: Cut back the old flowering stems 4-6 inches. Late Spring/Summer TRANSPLANT: to a 2-3 inch larger pot, then place in a shaded location for 2 to 3 weeks after re-planting. TURN: Rotate the plant consistently. FEED: Poinsettias like to eat, the more they do, the greener they get. To increase growth, fertilize every two weeks with a soluble fertilizer (20-20-20). Autumn RELOCATE: If the plant is outside, and the temperature falls below 60 degrees, bring the plant indoors aside a sunny window. Once the plant resides back inside, fertilizer amounts should be reduced. LIGHT REDUCTION: Flowers will bud between September to early October. To ensure budding, do not subject the plant to any light source at night. Cover with a paper bag or box if necessary. The plant should remain in complete darkness from 5 pm to 8 am, everyday during this time period. Once the plant flowers, which usually takes place about 40 days of treatment, pure darkness is no longer required. Maintenance does require patience, however, if the determination is there, your poinsettia should be in full bloom in time for the next holiday season. Good luck in enriching the life of your poinsettia!
As of January 1, 2007, California’s minimum wage compensation increased to $7.50 from $6.75 per hour. Following this, in January of 2008, the cost will raise to $8.00 per hour. An increase in compensation was last seen in January, 2002. Additionally, the price for fuel is very volatile and continues to go up, therefore increasing the expense of transportation and machine operation. The increases are significant and company owners statewide are making adjustments to business plans, budgets and service costs.
